It started over 40 years ago with Pat McKay. In her dog grooming business, she continually observed dogs suffering from skin disorders and digestive issues. Pat found that most of the problems could be resolved with a balanced raw meat-based diet. She was “the first with the best” and sold homemade pet food from her home in Pasadena, CA, and eventually opened her own nutrition centers. We are happy to share her nutrition program recipe with you and help you prepare the most nutritious pet food possible.
90% Raw Meat– This includes fat and organ meat. The meat must be fit for human consumption. The fat should be close to 30% of the meat. Do not choose lean meats. Chicken and turkey thighs (including the skin), beef chuck, leg of lamb roast, and pork shoulder/butt are all good choices. Other meats like elk, bison, or duck might be a little leaner so don’t be afraid to add extra butter – real salted butter. Of the 90% meat no more than 10% organ meat is needed. Try to find heart, liver and kidney of the same muscle protein type. Do not mix proteins. If you are feeding chicken then only chicken organ meat should be added. If quality organ meat is not available for the protein you are preparing then do not add any organ meat to the meal. If you find good organ meats you can always chop it up and freeze it to use as nutritious treats that your pet can enjoy anytime.
10% Cooked or Steamed Vegetables – The best vegetable choices are broccoli, squash, zucchini, celery, cauliflower and green beans. Asparagus and occasionally pumpkin can also be used. Refer to the "No-No" list for ill-advised vegetables and other unrecommended ingredients.
